Fun card games to play on a coach

A good way to pass the time on a long coach journey is to play a game of cards. This is especially useful if you are seated around a table on the coach. Take a deck of cards along and you can keep yourself amused and entertain fellow passengers as well, some of these games are handy to know if you have a long journey ahead of you.

1. Rummy

A classic game of cards that’s easy to learn, the object of the game is to get rid of all your cards as soon as you can.

To do this you have to group the cards into ‘melds’ which consist of three of one or four of the other.

Players get seven cards each and the objective is to get three or four of the same kind of card (four aces, twos, threes etc) along with three or four of the same suit (two, three, four, five of hearts etc).

Once players are dealt their cards the remaining cards are placed face down on the table, players can pick up a fresh card from the middle but they must ‘discard’ one of their cards after they have selected a new card.

The winner is the first person to get rid of their cards in melds.

2. War

This is a really good game for two players and suitable for kids and adults alike.

Deal a deck of cards evenly between two players but keep them face down on a table. Turn the top cards of each pile over and place them side by side. The player with the highest value gets to keep both cards which they place at the bottom of their pile.

If two cards are the same value a state of ‘war’ is declared and players have to pick two cards each, one of which is placed face down and one face up on the playing pile.

Whoever has the highest value top card wins the round and they get to keep all six cards. The winner is the person who collects all the cards at the end.

3. Solitaire

This is a great game for solo travellers or for those times when nobody else wants to play cards with you.

Different versions of solitaire are popular, in the classic game the aim is to end up with four suits of cards in ascending order starting with an ace and ending with a king.

There are various online tutorials that show you how to set up and play different versions of solitaire, learn a few methods and whenever you have a long coach journey to make you’ll have different games to keep you entertained.
