How to prevent travel sickness

If you suffer from motion sickness then travelling by coach can be quite a stressful experience. Perhaps you’ve been invited on a corporate team building trip or a day at the races for a stag do. The thought of getting sick on the coach might be enough to make you turn down the invitation. But why should you miss out on the fun just because there’s a chance you’ll suffer with motion sickness on the journey? As the coach travel experts we know a thing or two about how to handle motion sickness, follow our tips for a fuss-free coach journey...

Before the journey

Have a light meal an hour or so before the journey so that you’ve got something in your stomach to bring up if you do get sick, but avoid spicy and fatty food, and overly large meals. It’s also advisable to avoid drinking alcohol prior to your journey; you may feel like it calms your nerves but it’s actually a poison that can make you sick.

Take a travel sickness pill before your journey. They work by delaying digestion and/or blocking the signals from the nervous system that cause motion-induced vomiting and nausea. Medication doesn’t usually work effectively once the symptoms appear so try to take it around 30 minutes before your journey.

During the journey

Make sure you’re sat in a forward facing seat for the duration of the journey; travelling backwards can make motion sickness worse. Try to choose a window seat as it can help to look out of the window at the horizon and focus your vision on a fixed object.

Avoid reading, playing games etc while the coach is in motion as this can make your symptoms worse. If you start to feel nauseous try closing your eyes, and if possible hap a sleep. If sleep eludes you then try opening a window to let some fresh air in, and take off some layers so that you don’t get too hot.

Minimise your head and body movements during the journey by using a pillow or headrest to keep your head still. Some motion sickness sufferers find acupressure bands effective; they press gently into your inner wrist and help to alleviate feelings of nausea.
